Music Theory

Ages: All Private Lesson Students

As there is not always time for teachers to tend to students theory of music the teachers of Philomusica have come up with an idea!

There will be one teacher available from 3:30pm – 7 pm daily to tend to only theory for the students.

This means that a student can have their instrument lesson at the assigned time and then attend a theory class either before and or after their lesson up to 60 minutes. The time can be left up to the discretion of the parent/student. As theory is an important aspect of music and we would like to enter students for theory exams, they do not have to cram the material in at the last minute and this would also allow parents a little more time for shopping or whatever!

Fee: $32 per month

We would like to provide this service for you for having an extra hour of theory participation; however, we cannot pro-rate for lesser participation. Please make use of this offer.

—————————————————————————————–

ABRCM & CAMP

ABRCM—The Associated Board of the Royal College of Music

These exams will take place in May where an examiner will be flown in from London. These exams are so highly evaluated all over the world that they provide a “real” evaluation of the student. They provide eight levels.

In 2012 Philomusica will be entering students in an internationally recognized level of musicianship of piano, instrumental and theory exams.

CAMP – Colorado Association of Music Proficiency

The teachers will be advising students as to which association they think would be an appropriate entry.

For students who would like a high level, local and a more relaxed evaluation, the performance will still be judged and open to the public. There will be trophies and certificates awarded to all students.

Please read the following Do’s and Don’ts for parents sheet that was created to help you get the most out of your students music lessons.

Do’s

Make clear to your child at the outset of lessons, in an enthusiastic manner, that music training is a long-term process, just like school, but with many high points of pleasure along the way.

Your child has his own unique pace, so avoid comparing him to siblings or neighbors’ children who may appear to be playing better than he. Anticipate “ups and downs” in his attitude and progress, along with a number of “growing pain” periods.

Seriously contemplate how to help your child. Knowing when to help, when to be supportive, and when to withdraw to encourage him to help himself, is a parental art in itself.

Stress that quality, not quantity, of practice is what results in real progress.

“Music comes to the child more naturally when there is music in his mother’s speaking voice,” said the violin educator, Suzuki. So be pleasant and encouraging about your child’s practicing. Naturally there will be occasions when you will need to be firm. But, remember, with “music in your voice,” coach him, guide him, and don’t police him.

When you help your child, be at his side – not at the other end of the room or in the next room. Teach him to treat the practice session with the same respect he gives to his lesson period.

During a “crisis,” always “talk it out” with your child in an atmosphere of mutual respect. If the issue is serious, you may need to discuss it with the teacher first. Allow your child to participate in the final decision so he feels that his voice has been heard. Teach him to interact constructively in group decision making.

A sense of humor is a powerful tool with which to resolve disagreements about practicing.

Always let your child feel you are proud of his achievements, even when they are small.

Don’ts

Never belittle your child’s efforts.

Don’t despair at temporary lapses in practice. Threats can work during periods of high motivation in music, but may boomerang during a “growing pain” period. The day may come when he will remind you of your threat and insist that you make good on it.

Don’t criticize your child in the presence of others, especially the teacher. The teacher has skillfully built up a good relationship with your child, and his “loss of face” will tend to undermine it. Speak to the teacher privately about problems, and to others not at all.

Your financial investment in your child’s music lessons pays its dividends through the skills he acquires over the years, not by the amount of his daily practice, or how much he plays for you or your guests. Remember you are giving your child a music education for his artistic use, for his self expression, and his pleasure. Don’t expect him as a child to be grateful for your sacrifices. His gratitude will come years later when he can play and enjoy music as an adult.

Newsletter April 2011

National Federation of Music Festival

Congratulations to the many students from Philomusica that participated in the 2011 National Federation of Music Festival on April 2nd. We would like to especially congratulate those that received Superior and Excellent ratings in solo performance!!! We had 52 Superior ratings and 25 Excellent ratings. Look for your child’s name in the Coloradoan during the month of April. Please check back later in the month for Theory results. Thank you to all who made the National Federation of Music Festival a success!!!!!!!

Group Piano Incentive Program

Beginning in April Philomusica will be implementing an Incentive Program for the group piano classes. Children will be evaluated each week on their piano skill/performance. Evaluation will be based on note recognition, accuracy of rhythm and maintaining a steady beat. Children will also be evaluated on time spent practicing. Each child will receive 1, 3, or 5 points. Each value will correspond to a specific color that will change each month. After four weeks, students receiving a perfect score of 20 points will receive a prize (chosen from a prize box) as well as a certificate.

Looking for volunteers

We have an opportunity to spruce up the decorations in the studio. There is a

photographer that is interested in taking some pictures of the students with

instruments. The pictures would be in black and white with a hint of color. If you

think you would be interested in helping liven up the walls of Philomusica please let us know. This is absolutely FREE! We are hoping to have a list of candidates by the 20th of April. The sign up sheet will be on the table in the main waiting space. Thank you in advance!

Registration Day: Sunday May 22, 2011

Philomusica will be holding our first ever registration day as we have expanded and many teachers schedules are full.

The registration day will be for the purpose of reserving space for our students as well as the deadline for preserving the same prices for current students.

This day will include a BBQ get together –allowing present & new students/parents to meet one another and provide an opportunity for students to reserve their space for the 2011-2012 studio year with their teacher.

This will also allow parents/students to register for summer lessons and summer camps. We will be raising our prices this Fall and we would like to extend the present prices to our current parents/students. – Sunday, May 22, or before, is the deadline to receive current prices.

Summer Months:

Another change is that automatic payments will continue through the summer months. Therefore it would be necessary to fill in the summer registration form, circling the number of weeks attending, as the fees will be pro-rated. Please decide to allow your children to take some lessons during the summer as a complete stop means a lot of revision in the new school year. Many parents have mentioned that they were happy that they enrolled their children in the summer, as they were able to practice so much more and progressed faster. That is why we are pro-rating the classes/lessons – to keep the music going.

Please register by May 22 or sooner for the sake of the instructors,

Philomusica’s scheduling purposes and current prices.

Philo or Pre-piano classes: payment schedule will remain the same.

Philo & Pre-Piano classes will remain the same and we will add Wed. & Fri. 9:30 &/or 10:30AM class (feedback about which times would be helpful).

Group Piano: class fees will be raised so please register on or before May 22nd. The group piano schedule will remain the same and we will add a Mon. Wed. & Friday morning class at 9:30 &/or 10:30AM(feedback about which times would be helpful).

Giving Thanks & Gift Certificate & C.D.’s
Hope you had a happy thanksgiving. Our family gave thanks for our many blessings, and be able to do what we love – bring the gift of music to you. Some of our families have entrusted their children’s music education to us for the past 12 years. We are one big family. Thank you!

By the way, talking about gifts, please remember that we do offer gift certificates. Perhaps friends, siblings or other extended family would appreciate gift certificates for a month or two of music lessons or classes.

Jason & Sharon are the owners of “Silver Assets” a beautiful silver jewelry store downtown close to Bisetti’s. Do visit them sometime. Let Jason know that you attend Philomusica!

Hello Philomusica family & friends

Summer is flying by quickly, and going well. Our picnic and recital planned in June had to be relocated because of the rain, so we held the recital indoors, where else, but at our new Philomusica performance hall. The recital went very well with over 100 people in the hall. Everyone had a good time enjoying an hour long recital and picnic indoors afterward.

New Performance/Lecture Hall available for rent

Our new Philomusica performance and lecture hall, designed by master Interior Designer Katarina Bolshakova (KB Designs), accommodates close to 100 people and is now available for rent to interested parties independent from Philomusica. The close proximity to Whole Foods and its unique ambience makes it the ideal meeting facility. Talk to us about your plans.

Summer classes

Regular classes and lessons are ongoing throughout the summer. We believe that summer is a great time for practice and improvement. While many families are going on vacation and attendance can be sporadic, students are still able to have lessons at Philomusica during the summer weeks. Summer fees are pro-rated and based on the weeks that you can attend. So don’t hesitate to continue your summer lessons.

Fall registration fees by July 15

Classes and private lessons are filling up fast. We would like to accommodate children with siblings attending at the same time so families can save time and make a single trip to Philomusica. However, spaces are limited, especially on popular days and times. Our annual fall registration fees are due by July 15, 2010. Please pay your registration fees soon to reserve your places, and get your schedule requests to us to avoid disappointment.

Philomusica closed August 16 to 29 when school starts

There will be no classes and lessons from August 16 to 29, 2010. Philomusica will take a two-week break when school starts, to enable students to get settled in their first two weeks at school. During this time, we will check phone messages periodically. Please contact the Philomusica office early to confirm your fall schedule. Classes and lessons at Philomusica will resume on Monday, August 30, 2010.

Violin Performance Workshop on Sunday, August 15

Our Philomusica violin students will have the privilege of participating in the performance workshop with our guest master violinist, Alvaro deGranda. The workshop will start at 3pm on Sunday, August 15, 2010. Students are required to play a violin piece and Mr deGranda will provide tips for students to improve on their performance.

About Alvaro deGranda:

Mr deGranda was in the Cleveland Orchestra as assistant concertmaster. Over the years, Mr. deGranda has performed in the United States, Europe, and Latin America, and has participated in the Aspen, Casals, and Marlboro music festivals.

Thinking of beginning violin lessons or are you an intermediate student? Please call us if you would like to attend the workshop or take violin lessons.

Wishing you a great summer.

Nicolette & Gunter Bischof
